Cheese of doom

We were given a voucher for 10% off ready-to-consume goods at Kurtz Orchirds "a block away" from the store that I bought a number of my jarred preserves and mustards. So EY and I decided to trek it up there. Thank goodness we *drove* because it was a very long block away… think 1 mile at least! When we got there, there wasn’t much difference in the products present than at the store we had just left (grrr…) except for a couple tired looking muffins, loaves and some reasonably decent looking croissants. EY felt snacky (I had my scone) and bought the cheese croissant. We waited forever at the cash register for the couple employees to serve us and another customer. After paying the .25 for what appeared to be an overpriced bun, I noted that his croissant had a big air pocket and laughed at the misfortune… until I saw, it was a giant pocket of CHEESE! Worth every cent of the .25, IMOH, but maybe not the crazy trip up there if you didn’t have a car.

a bit of a homecoming moment…
then the car broke down and all we wanted to do was leave again.
whakamaru is the first place i lived. in a hydro-scheme house in the village. on 23rd dec we drove past and i cried "Black Swans!!" They’re back.
the swans arrived in the early eighties, but i had heard they’d left…. so we pulled in a rest area and took photos of black swans…
time to leave, we backed into the tiniest tree stump and bent the exhaust pipe… we clang and bang into the Whakamaru garage, and discover the damage…
so now, 45 minutes to kill in Whakamaru, my old home. We walked around for a while, realised why we left (there’s nothing here but swans and water).. and then went back for the car
disaster, eftpos is down. don’t have cash, can’t pay the mechanic.. after a few tense moments, we promise we’ll be back on boxing day and then we climb into the car and head up to hamilton.

Could have gone by train but we like to go out n about in the car which also enables us to get around freely without waiting for public transport at the destination.
Here we are passing through the ETC which is the Electronic Toll Collection system which lets us pass through without stopping the car and manually handing over cash. We get billed at the end of the month for using the highways.
For the past 10 months or so, the government has been making it dead cheap to use the highways on certain days. Trips that would normally cost ||10000|| now cost a mere ||1000||. When there is a public holiday on a Friday or Monday, many citizens would make use of the 1000 yen deal and get out n about for the long weekend which would cause longer tailbacks on the highway…

While the 1000 yen deal gets more people out n about which stimulates economic growth especially at tourist spots, the coach and shinkansen bullet trains have taken a hard hit as more people want to travel by car instead – understandable as folks only pay 1000 yen for a car filled with people.
